Best Heathrow Plane Spotting Spots for Aviation Enthusiasts

For aviation enthusiasts, there are few thrills quite like the roar of a jet engine overhead or the satisfying click of a perfect aircraft photo. At Arco Aviation, we know how special these moments are—that’s why we’re highlighting the best plane spotting locations at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), one of the busiest and most exciting aviation hubs in the world.

Whether you're an experienced spotter or just getting started, here's where you should set up for the best views and photos.

📍 1. Myrtle Avenue (Runway 27L Approach)

Location: Near Hatton Cross Tube Station
Why It’s Great:
Myrtle Avenue is a legendary location for spotters around the world. Aircraft on final approach to Runway 27L fly incredibly low right over the road—perfect for wide-angle shots, landing gear close-ups, and raw jet-engine excitement.

Tips:

  • Bring a wide-angle lens for dramatic overhead shots.

  • Best lighting is during the afternoon.

  • Easily accessible by public transport (Piccadilly Line to Hatton Cross).

📍 2. The Heathrow Academy (Southern Perimeter Road)

Location: Near the roundabout off Southern Perimeter Road
Why It’s Great:
This spot gives a great view of taxiing aircraft and departures on Runway 27R or arrivals on 09L. A good location if you enjoy spotting ground movements and close-ups of aircraft at slower speeds.

Tips:

  • Ideal for photography with a telephoto lens (200mm+).

  • Great all-day spot thanks to parking and proximity to facilities.

  • Be mindful of road traffic—use caution when positioning.

📍 3. Terminal 5 Short Stay Car Park (Top Level)

Location: Level 5, Terminal 5 short stay car park
Why It’s Great:
From here, you can spot aircraft taxiing and taking off from Runway 27R, and see planes lining up for departure. It’s a convenient location for a quick session.

Tips:

  • You may need to pay for parking—check current rates.

  • Best in the morning for lighting.

  • Security might occasionally ask spotters to move on, so be discreet.

📍 4. Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel

Location: Bath Road, across from the north runway
Why It’s Great:
For the comfort of indoor spotting, you can’t beat a room with a runway view. The Renaissance is famous among aviation fans for its unbeatable view of 27R and 09L.

Tips:

  • Ask for a runway-facing room when booking.

  • Perfect for extended spotting sessions, especially during poor weather.

  • A good location for timelapse or night photography.

📍 5. Harmondsworth Moor

Location: West of Runway 27L
Why It’s Great:
A peaceful, lesser-known spot near the River Colne with a view of aircraft on final approach to 27L. Great for a quieter experience, especially on sunny days.

Tips:

  • A good spot for long-lens photography and video.

  • Wear comfortable shoes—there’s a bit of walking involved.

  • Lighting is best from late morning to afternoon.

🧭 Plane Spotting Etiquette & Safety

We want to keep the skies—and our community—safe. Here are a few quick reminders:

  • Always respect private property and signage.

  • Don’t obstruct roadways or pathways.

  • Be polite to locals and airport staff.

  • Keep your gear tidy and stay aware of your surroundings.
